San Benito County is embarking on the journey of updating its Safety Element, a key Element of the County’s General Plan that addresses how the community prepares for and responds to natural and human-made hazards. The Safety Element identifies hazards such as wildfires, flooding, earthquakes, and extreme heat and outlines strategies to reduce their impact on people, property, and critical infrastructure.
Public Review Draft:
PUBLIC REVIEW PERIOD: Friday July 3rd, 2026, to Sunday August 2nd, 2026
NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN of the availability of the San Benito County Safety Element Public Review Draft. This update of the Safety Element constitutes an amendment of the General Plan. A 30-day review and comment period is provided. After the review period, the County will notify dates for the Planning Commission hearing and the Board of Supervisors hearing for the adoption of the Safety Element. Public hearings will be held at the Board of Supervisors Chambers, located at 481 4th St, Hollister, CA 95023.
The following major issues are addressed by the goals, policies, and actions of this Safety Element:
- Reduce risks and protect residents, property, critical facilities, and infrastructure from natural and human-made hazards;
- Improve community resilience to climate change;
- Strengthen emergency preparedness, response, evacuation, and recovery capabilities; and
- Promote coordinated hazard mitigation, public safety services, and long-term community resilience.
The purpose of these requirements is to identify existing and future safety risks facing San Benito County and to establish goals, policies, and actions that reduce hazard exposure, protect public health and safety, enhance emergency preparedness, and support resilient development patterns throughout the County.
