COUNTY OF SAN BENITOISSUES PUBLIC WARNING REGARDING FRAUDULENT EMAIL SCAM

SAN BENITO COUNTY, CA — The County of San Benito is warning residents, contractors, applicants, and members of the public about a recent email scam involving fraudulent messages impersonating County staff associated with Planning and Building Services.

County officials became aware of scam emails being sent from unauthorized email domains that falsely appear to represent County personnel. These fraudulent emails reportedly attempt to solicit wire transfers or payments for invoices related to County applications and services.

The County wants to remind the public that official County communications are sent only through verified County email domains ending in “@sanbenitocountyca.gov.” Residents are urged to exercise caution when receiving unexpected requests for payment, especially those requesting wire transfers, payment through unofficial channels, or immediate action.

The County advises the public to:

  • Carefully verify the sender’s email address before responding to any message.
  • Avoid opening suspicious attachments or clicking unfamiliar links.
  • Contact the appropriate County department directly using official contact information listed on the County website to confirm payment requests or invoices.
  • Report suspicious communications immediately.

County Information Technology staff and County administration are actively reviewing the matter and coordinating appropriate response efforts. The issue has also been referred for further review and investigation.

The County remains committed to protecting the public and encourages anyone who may have received a suspicious email related to County business to contact the appropriate County department directly.
