SAN JUAN HIGHWAY REPAVING PROJECT

SAN BENITO COUNTY, CA – San Benito County is excited to announce the start of the San Juan Highway Repaving Project beginning April 13, 2026.

The project is part of broader efforts by the San Benito County Board of Supervisors to improve road conditions with a current focus on areas with higher-volume traffic and safety concerns. This project, contracted to Granite Construction, will include fully repaving San Juan Highway/Chittenden Road, starting at the State Route 129 jurisdiction to Anzar High School’s southern access gate, where the roadway conditions have deteriorated significantly.

The work will include Full-Depth Reclamation (FDR) rehabilitation and will include overnight closures during the FDR work. Construction will start Monday, April 13, with overnight closures from 7 pm to 6 am currently scheduled for Wednesday, April 15, and Thursday, April 16,during the heavier FDR portion of the project. These closures will allow school traffic to continue accessing the campus from the southern access gate while maintaining access for businesses on the northern side of the project with minimal wait times.

This full-width overnight closure period will allow more efficient, higher quality work in a safe environment. Upon reopening at the beginning of the day shift, traffic will be allowed to drive on the FDR surface with delineators placed on the centerline.

Drivers may experience some brief daytime delays during the project. When the paving portion is done, the contractor will install striping and signage, expected to occur from the end of April to mid-May when the project is scheduled for completion.

The San Benito County Board of Supervisors supported this project, along with recent work that started to repave about 3 miles of Union Road. Plans are underway for additional road repaving projects, including the remainder of Fairview Road. Please look for more details on this and other projects.

Below, please see the attached map showing plans for the detour via Searle Road when overnight closures are in place.
